Railway Museum of Catalonia

Railway Museum of Catalonia Vilanova i la Geltrú

Railway Museum of Catalonia

Situated in the picturesque coastal town of Vilanova i la Geltrú, the Railway Museum of Catalonia (Museo del Ferrocarril de Cataluña) is a treasure trove for railway enthusiasts and history buffs alike. This fascinating museum, inaugurated on August 3, 1990, offers a deep dive into the rich history of rail transport in Catalonia and beyond. Managed by the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles (FFE), it forms part of the Science and Technology Museum System of Catalonia and the Network of Museums of Spain.

The Historical Significance

The museum is housed in a historic steam locomotive depot, with the oldest building dating back to 1881. This was the year the railway connection between Vilanova i la Geltrú and Barcelona was inaugurated. The depot served as a base and repair workshop for locomotives until its closure in 1967. Over the years, the space was abandoned, becoming a resting place for old steam locomotives retired from active service.

In 1972, the site was revitalized for the XIX Congress of the European Union of Railway Modellers and Friends of the Railway (MOROP), showcasing a wide array of steam locomotives. This event highlighted the depot's unique features, including a fabulous roundhouse with 12 covered tracks, a turntable, and several water tanks. However, once the congress concluded, the restored vehicles were abandoned once again.

The Birth of the Museum

Fast forward to 1981, on the centenary of the railway line's inauguration, discussions between Renfe and the Generalitat of Catalonia led to a collaboration agreement to create a Railway Museum. The Generalitat rehabilitated the roundhouse building, while Renfe restored the vehicles and adapted the spaces. Finally, on August 5, 1990, the museum was officially opened under the name Museo del Ferrocarril de Villanueva y Geltrú.

In 1991, the museum's valuable assets were recognized, and it was integrated into the Territorial System of the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (mNACTEC). By 1993, Renfe entrusted the management of the museum to the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles, allowing it to open regularly to the public. The museum's audiovisual installation Puja al tren de la història won the international Laus award for excellence in visual communication.

Exploring the Exhibits

The Railway Museum of Catalonia offers a captivating journey through the history of rail transport. Visitors are welcomed into a complex that initially comprised the roundhouse and the old Renfe commissary building. Over the years, additional structures were added, including a large nave and the crane-bridge nave of the old railway workshops in Vilanova. In 2018, the panoramic nave was introduced, completing the ensemble.

The museum's collection features an impressive array of locomotives and railway vehicles, including 22 historic vehicles added in 1998. Among the highlights is the steam locomotive Mataró, which underwent significant restoration funded through a successful crowdfunding campaign. This initiative garnered substantial public visibility and recognition, earning the museum the Bonaplata Award from the Association of the Museum of Science and Industrial Archeology of Catalonia.

Interactive Experiences and Educational Programs

The museum is not just about static displays; it offers a range of interactive experiences and educational programs designed to engage visitors of all ages. The children's area, featuring the character Víctor, created by historian and communication head Ana Grande, is a hit among young visitors. Víctor is the protagonist of a collection of stories and the central figure in various children's activities.

For those interested in the technical aspects of rail transport, the museum's collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia has led to the establishment of a Master's program in Railway Systems and Electric Traction. This program leverages the museum's resources to provide in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in the field.

Special Events and Recognitions

The Railway Museum of Catalonia hosts numerous special events throughout the year, celebrating milestones in railway history. Notable events include the annual Camins de Ferro a Vilanova awards, recognizing individuals and organizations for their contributions to the museum. The museum also participates in significant commemorations, such as the 150th anniversary of the first Barcelona-Mataró railway line and the centenaries of railway arrivals in various Catalan towns.

In recent years, the museum has continued to expand and improve its facilities. The rehabilitation of historic buildings and the creation of new exhibition spaces, such as the Espai Gumà and the Espai Segle XXI, have enhanced the visitor experience. The museum's commitment to preserving and promoting railway heritage has earned it numerous accolades, including multiple Bonaplata Awards.
