Disappointed that the findings were sent to Taunton, Mable began amassing his own collection of natural history specimens and local ephemera, with the dream of creating a museum for the town.

In 1861, Mable's dream came to fruition when he donated his collection to the Night School committee, on the condition that a suitable place was provided for its display. By 1863, the collection found a home in the Albert Memorial Hall, next to Emmanuel Church. Despite initial resistance from some quarters, Mable's vision was supported by many, and the museum continued to grow.

A New Home and Continued Growth

After Mable's death in 1887, his vision of a public museum continued to evolve. In 1901, the museum moved to the first floor of the newly built Free Library and Museum on the town's Boulevard. This building, designed by local architects Hans Fowler Price and Sydney Wilde, was partly funded by public subscription and a generous bequest from Mr. Frederick Wood of Chew Magna.

In 1975, the museum relocated to its current premises on Burlington Street, the former offices and showrooms of the Weston Gaslight Company. This Grade II listed building, designed by Hans Fowler Price and William Jane in 1912, was saved from demolition and transformed into a new home for the museum. The museum was renamed 'The Woodspring Museum' and later 'The Time Machine' before adopting its current name, Weston Museum, in 2017.

Weston Museum underwent a major refurbishment, reopening in August 2017 with a fresh, modern look.
