These changes marked the transition from a simple early medieval structure to a more complex Romanesque design.
Throughout its history, Marienkirche has been a site of pilgrimage, drawing the faithful to its sacred halls. Under the guidance of Bishop Konrad von Querfurt around 1200, the church underwent further modifications, enhancing its stature as a princely court church. Despite suffering damage from a fire in 1600, it was restored by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter, who added a new choir and a distinctive dome, crowned with a bell tower lantern.
Visitors to Marienkirche are greeted by a striking portal crafted from red sandstone. This ornate entrance, a product of the Echter period, features intricate carvings of apostles Peter and Paul, the Annunciation, and a statue of the Virgin Mary. Above the portal, the richly decorated Echter coat of arms adds a regal touch.
Inside, the church's central structure houses a burial site adorned with 20 reliefs of Würzburg bishops, offering a glimpse into the ecclesiastical history of the region. This sacred space served as the final resting place for the hearts of Würzburg bishops from the 13th to the late 16th century, with their bodies interred in the Würzburg Cathedral.
