By 1802, the musée de la Bourse was formed, housing 85 paintings and engravings. Significant contributions from the state, including artworks from the Château de Versailles, enriched the collection. In 1828, the museum opened in the Salle de la Bourse, primarily showcasing antique statues. Over the next few decades, the Société des antiquaires de Picardie was established, furthering the mission of creating a dedicated museum space.

The Birth of a Museum

In 1851, the Société des antiquaires de Picardie was officially recognized, and with the support of Napoleon III, a lottery was organized to fund the construction of a new museum. The chosen site was the former arsenal of Amiens, and construction began in 1855 under the direction of architect Henri Parent. The design, inspired by the contemporary expansion of the Louvre, featured a grand central courtyard and a façade adorned with sculptures of notable figures from Picardie.

An Architectural Marvel

The Musée de Picardie, completed in 1867, was the first building in France specifically constructed as a museum of fine arts. Its innovative design included a central pavilion topped with a dome and two wings ending in prominent corner pavilions. The exterior is decorated with statues and medallions celebrating the region's illustrious figures, while the interior boasts a grand staircase, richly decorated rooms, and a chapel adorned with artistic works by Cauchemont and Arthur-Stanislas Diet.

The galleries also include murals by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, which were meticulously restored in 1987.

Modern Expansions and Renovations

As the museum's collection grew, so did the need for additional space. In the late 19th century, architect Émile Ricquier expanded the museum by adding new wings and covering the central courtyard, creating the current grand salon. In 1929, the museum was further enlarged with the addition of the Maignan Pavilion, housing the collections bequeathed by painter Albert Maignan and his wife.

More recently, extensive renovations and expansions were undertaken from 2016 to 2020 under the guidance of architects Catherine Frenak, Béatrice Jullien, and Jennifer Didelon. These efforts included restoring original painted decorations and improving public access, culminating in the museum's grand reopening in March 2020.
