The origins of the Cathedral of Saint Joseph are deeply intertwined with the waves of immigration that shaped Burlington in the 19th century. The first Catholic Church in Burlington was built on land donated by Col. Archibald Hyde, serving a burgeoning community of Irish and French Canadian immigrants. However, linguistic and cultural differences soon led the French-speaking members to seek a place where they could worship in their native tongue. Thus, in 1850, St. Joseph’s parish was established as the first French Canadian parish in the United States, marking the beginning of a vibrant community that would grow and thrive in the North End of Burlington.
The present church building, a masterpiece of ecclesiastical architecture, was designed in 1883 by Rev. Joseph Michaud, a self-taught architect from Montreal. Inspired by the Chapel of the Palace of Versailles, Michaud’s vision was one of grandeur and elegance. The cornerstone of the church was laid on July 4, 1884, and over the next four years, the structure took shape, built with the labor and financial sacrifices of its parishioners. On June 24, 1887, the church was dedicated on St. Jean the Baptist Day, a fitting tribute to its French Canadian roots, and blessed by the Archbishop of Montreal, Édouard-Charles Fabre.
The Cathedral of Saint Joseph is a striking example of 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Its design, inspired by the opulence of Versailles, features a grand façade, intricate stonework, and a towering steeple that reaches towards the heavens. The church’s interior is equally impressive, with a seating capacity designed to accommodate over 1,200 worshipers, making it the largest church in Vermont. Over the years, the cathedral has undergone several renovations, in 1920, 1968, and 2000-2001, each time preserving its historical integrity while adapting to the needs of its congregation.
In 1999, the Cathedral of Saint Joseph was named the co-cathedral of the Burlington diocese, sharing this honor with the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. However, due to declining attendance and financial constraints, a decision was made to merge the two cathedrals. By 2017, Sunday Masses were held at St. Joseph, while the Immaculate Conception hosted weekday and monthly Vietnamese services. In April 2018, Bishop Christopher Coyne decreed that St. Joseph would be the sole diocesan cathedral, and later that year, the Immaculate Conception building was relegated to secular use and subsequently sold. The final Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church was celebrated on December 8, 2018, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for St. Joseph’s.
The Cathedral of Saint Joseph has not been without its challenges. In November 2010, a violent storm damaged the church’s steeple, necessitating the removal of its top portion. The 800 lb wrought-iron cross that once crowned the steeple was placed into storage, and extensive renovations were required to repair the belfry. The cost of restoring the steeple to its original height was estimated at $1 million, a sum the church could not immediately afford. However, through generous donations and the sale of the parish’s school building in April 2018, the necessary funds were raised, and the restoration project was completed in May 2019, restoring the steeple to its former glory.
