Como–Brunate funicular

The Como–Brunate funicular, known locally as the Funicolare Como-Brunate, is a delightful gem nestled in the picturesque landscape of Lombardy, Italy. This charming funicular railway connects the city of Como with the quaint hilltop village of Brunate, offering passengers not only a convenient mode of transportation but also an unforgettable journey with breathtaking views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.

The History of the Como–Brunate Funicular

In the late 19th century, Brunate was a secluded village, accessible primarily by a mule track. The idea of a funicular railway was conceived in 1890 by local residents and vacationers eager to break the isolation and promote tourism. The Società Anonima per la Funicolare Como-Brunate was established in 1891, and construction began shortly thereafter. The funicular was inaugurated on November 11, 1894, initially powered by a steam engine due to water supply issues in the area.

Over the years, the funicular has undergone several upgrades. In 1911, the steam engine was replaced with electric motors, allowing for more frequent service. The system was completely overhauled in 1935, reducing the journey time to just over six minutes. Despite the upheavals of two world wars, the funicular continued to thrive, becoming a vital link for residents and tourists alike.

Riding the Como–Brunate Funicular

Embarking on a journey aboard the Como–Brunate funicular is an experience not to be missed. The adventure begins at the station in Como, located conveniently in Piazza A. De Gasperi. As the funicular ascends the steep incline, passengers are treated to panoramic vistas of the sparkling Lake Como and the lush hillsides.

The journey covers a distance of 1,074 meters, overcoming a vertical rise of nearly 494 meters. The funicular operates on a single track with a passing loop halfway, where the ascending and descending cars gracefully pass each other. The trip takes approximately seven minutes, offering ample time to soak in the stunning scenery.
