The pier's early years were marked by challenges, including a severe storm on New Year's Day in 1877 that swept away the landward half. Undeterred, the pier was rebuilt at a higher level, resulting in a distinctive drop towards the seaward end.

Eastbourne Pier is a marvel of Victorian engineering, with its 300-meter-long structure resting on stilts that allow it to move with the tides and withstand rough weather. In 1888, a domed pavilion seating 400 people was added at the seaward end, providing a venue for entertainment and leisure. This pavilion was later replaced by a 1,000-seater theatre, bar, camera obscura, and office suite in 1899-1901. Two saloons were also built midway along the pier during this period.

A Hub of Entertainment

Paddle steamers, such as the PS Brighton Queen and PS Devonia, operated from the pier, offering trips along the south coast, to the Isle of Wight, and across the Channel to Boulogne. These excursions were immensely popular until the outbreak of World War II, after which the paddle steamers were gradually phased out, with the final season operated by a motor vessel in 1957.

During World War II, the pier played a strategic role in coastal defense. Part of the decking was removed, and machine guns were installed in the theatre to repel potential enemy landings. A Bofors anti-aircraft gun was also positioned midway along the pier. In December 1942, an exploding mine caused significant damage to the pier and nearby hotels. Despite these challenges, the pier's resilience shone through, and it continued to be a beloved landmark.

Modern-Day Attractions

Today, Eastbourne Pier offers a delightful array of attractions for visitors of all ages. The landward half of the pier features a fish and chip kiosk, an amusement arcade, and a fast-food outlet. For more than a decade, the pier hosted the town's annual Birdman competition, where competitors donned homemade costumes and leapt into the sea to see who could fly the furthest. This quirky event added to the pier's charm and drew crowds of spectators.

Resilience and Renewal

Eastbourne Pier has faced its share of challenges, including a devastating fire on July 30, 2014, that severely damaged the central domed building. Sussex Police initially ruled out arson, but later investigations suggested it might have been deliberate. Despite the extensive damage, the pier's resilience once again prevailed. The East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service deployed up to 80 officers to tackle the blaze, saving two-thirds of the pier and preserving its outer pavilion.

In October 2015, local hotelier Abid Gulzar purchased the pier and undertook extensive repairs and renovations. Today, Eastbourne Pier stands as a testament to the community's enduring love and commitment to preserving this historic landmark.
