Towner Eastbourne Eastbourne

Towner Eastbourne

Nestled on the picturesque south coast of England in Eastbourne, Towner Eastbourne is a contemporary art gallery that stands as a beacon of cultural enrichment and artistic innovation. With its striking modern architecture and vibrant exterior, Towner Eastbourne is more than just a gallery; it is a dynamic hub for the arts, offering a rich tapestry of exhibitions, programs, and events that cater to art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

A Journey Through History

The story of Towner Eastbourne begins in 1920 with the generous bequest of Alderman John Chisholm Towner, a local alderman who envisioned a public art gallery for the people of Eastbourne. His legacy included 22 paintings and a sum of £6,000, which set the foundation for what would become one of the most significant public art collections in the South of England. The gallery first opened its doors in 1923 within a charming 18th-century Manor House located in the Old Town area of Eastbourne.

For over seven decades, the Manor House served as the home of the Towner Art Gallery, nestled amidst the historic surroundings of Manor Gardens. However, in 2005, the building was sold, and the gallery temporarily closed its doors. After a brief hiatus, Towner Eastbourne re-emerged in 2009 in a purpose-built facility designed by Rick Mather Architects. This new location, adjacent to the Congress Theatre and near Eastbourne's scenic seafront, was constructed at a cost of £8.6 million and was designed to reflect the iconic chalk cliffs of the Eastbourne Downs.

An Artistic Landmark

The contemporary design of Towner Eastbourne's new building is a testament to its forward-thinking approach. Built mainly from concrete, the gallery's architecture is both functional and visually striking, providing a climate-controlled environment for its growing collection of over 5,000 works of art. The exterior of the building was transformed in 2019 by German artist Lothar Götz, whose large-scale, colourful geometric mural, Dance Diagonal, has become a defining feature of the gallery's identity.

Inside, visitors will find a spacious and welcoming environment that includes a café, shop, and ample exhibition space. The gallery's collection spans a wide range of artistic styles and mediums, from historic Victorian narrative paintings to modern and contemporary works. Notable artists represented in the collection include Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Vanessa Bell, David Bomberg, Olafur Eliasson, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso, and Eric Ravilious, among others.

Highlights of the Collection

One of the key elements of the Towner Collection is the work of Eric Ravilious, an important modern British artist who studied and taught at the Eastbourne School of Art. The gallery holds the most extensive collection of Ravilious's paintings, illustrations, and commercial designs in the world, offering a unique insight into his artistic legacy.

In addition to Ravilious, the collection features a diverse array of oil paintings, watercolours, works on paper, etchings, prints, sculptures, ceramic objects, installations, and video art. The gallery's commitment to showcasing a wide range of artistic expressions ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

A Dynamic Cultural Hub

Towner Eastbourne is not just a repository of art; it is a vibrant cultural hub that engages the community through a variety of programs and events. From artist talks and workshops to film screenings and family-friendly activities, the gallery offers numerous opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in the world of art.

In 2023, Towner Eastbourne celebrated its centenary year with a series of special events and exhibitions, including hosting the prestigious Turner Prize. This milestone year highlights the gallery's enduring commitment to promoting artistic excellence and fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts.

Future Collect and Beyond

Looking to the future, Towner Eastbourne has partnered with the Institute of International Visual Arts (iniva) for the Future Collect project. This initiative aims to reimagine the future of public art collections to better reflect the cultural diversity of contemporary society. Through this partnership, the gallery continues to evolve and adapt, ensuring that it remains a relevant and inclusive space for all.

In conclusion, Towner Eastbourne is a must-visit destination for anyone with a passion for art and culture. Its rich history, impressive collection, and commitment to community engagement make it a standout institution on the south coast of England. Whether you are an art aficionado or simply looking for an inspiring day out, Towner Eastbourne offers a captivating experience that will leave a lasting impression.
