Wildlands, officially known as WILDLANDS Adventure Zoo Emmen, is a magnificent blend of zoo and theme park located in the vibrant town of Emmen, Netherlands. The development of this new park began in earnest in 2013, with the first tree planted in May of that year. By March 2015, the park had been christened Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, and it officially opened its doors to the public on March 18, 2016, inaugurated by King Willem-Alexander.

The creation of Wildlands was a monumental project with a budget of 200 million euros, funded by the Municipality of Emmen, the province of Drenthe, various government subsidies, banks, companies, and sponsors. The park's design and theming were a collaborative effort between Dierenpark Emmen and Jora Vision, with Volker Wessels serving as the main contractor. Despite initial financial challenges and fluctuating visitor numbers, Wildlands has continued to evolve, adding new exhibits and attractions to enhance the visitor experience.

Exploring Wildlands

Wildlands is divided into three major themed areas, each representing a different climate zone: Jungola, Serenga, and Nortica. Each zone features not only characteristic animal species and plants but also themed buildings, dining options, shops, entertainment, and attractions. Visitors enter the park through an underpass beneath the striking Atlas Theater, leading to the central Kompasplein, from which the three climate zones can be accessed.

Jungola: A Tropical Adventure

Jungola immerses visitors in the lush, vibrant environment of a tropical rainforest. The journey begins at the Butterfly Temple, a tropical greenhouse teeming with butterflies, broad-snouted caimans, and reticulated pythons. Outside, squirrel monkeys frolic freely among the visitors, and a raft crossing adds a touch of adventure. The centerpiece of Jungola is Rimbula, the world's largest tropical zoo greenhouse, which houses a variety of species including Asian elephants, ring-tailed lemurs, and white-handed gibbons.
