In the same year, the church council commissioned the construction of a parsonage next door, designed by Ytzen van der Veen. This building, completed around 1924, complemented the church and provided a residence for the clergy, adding to the community's growing infrastructure.

A Time of Change

The mid-20th century brought significant changes to the Zuiderkerk and its congregation. As the number of Reformed believers in Emmen swelled from 600 to 1300 between 1920 and 1941, additional facilities became necessary. A temporary wooden church, the Noorderkerk, was established on Heidelaan, marking the beginning of the Zuiderkerk's new identity.

In the years that followed, the congregation faced many challenges, including the eventual closure of the Noorderkerk and the construction of the Ichthuskerk in 1955. The latter remains in use today, symbolizing the dynamic nature of religious life in Emmen.

In 2004, a national merger formed the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, and by 2008, Emmen's local congregations had united. The prospect of demolition loomed, but the community rallied to save this beloved landmark. In May 2010, efforts to protect the church culminated in its designation as a municipal monument in 2013, despite opposition from the church's governing body. This status ensured the building's preservation and opened new possibilities for its future.

Reimagining the Zuiderkerk

With its future secured, the Zuiderkerk entered a new chapter. In 2015, it was sold with the condition that it could be converted into residential apartments. The transformation was completed by March 2017, with the church now housing thirteen apartments and the adjacent parsonage containing four. This adaptive reuse respects the building's architectural heritage while providing modern living spaces.

During its transition, the Zuiderkerk briefly served as a gallery and concert venue, hosting cultural events that breathed new life into its historic walls. The last concert on its renowned organ was performed by Martin Mans in January 2016, before the instrument found a new home in Romania.
