The first prize went to a neo-Gothic design by Claus Mehs and Hermann Jehs, but it was the second-place design by Heinrich Stöckhardt and Paul Nisse, titled Gänsemädel (Goose Girl), that ultimately captured the hearts of the judges and the public.

The fountain features a charming bronze statue of a young girl holding a goose, affectionately known as Gänseliesel. The design process included careful consideration of the fountain’s placement and proportions, leading to a final structure that stands 7.10 meters tall, crafted from Beucha granite and Wünschelburger sandstone, with the figure of Gänseliesel cast in bronze. Despite some initial criticisms regarding the statue’s size in relation to the imposing Old Town Hall, the Gänseliesel quickly became a cherished emblem of Göttingen.

A Symbol of Göttingen’s Identity

The Gänseliesel-Brunnen has endured various changes and restorations over the years, including damage during World War II and several refurbishments due to wear and vandalism. The original Gänseliesel figure was replaced by a replica in 1990, with the original now housed in the city museum.

This tradition was so popular that in 1926, a regulation was imposed to prevent students from climbing the fountain and kissing the statue, leading to the famous Kiss Trial when a law student defied the ban. Although the student’s plea for kiss freedom was denied, the tradition persisted, and in 2001, the city officially lifted the ban in honor of the fountain’s centenary.
