Perched gracefully on the left bank of the Meuse River, at the intersection of Quai de la Batte and Rue sur Meuse, the Hôtel de la Cloche in Huy, Belgium, is a stunning example of early 17th-century architecture. Known locally as the Hotel van de Klok, this historical gem dates back to 1606 and has been a listed building since January 14, 1950. Today, it serves as a private residence, but its storied past and architectural splendor continue to captivate those who pass by.

A Glimpse into History

In the 17th century, the Hôtel de la Cloche was a bustling inn where boats traveling between Liège and Namur would dock. The hotel's unique name, which translates to Hotel of the Bell, originates from the bell on the arriving boats that would ring to announce the arrival of travelers and goods. This lively atmosphere made the Hôtel de la Cloche a central hub of activity and commerce along the Meuse River.

By the mid-19th century, the building had transitioned from an inn to a residence for numerous modest families, earning it the nickname Maison des 36 ménages or House of 36 Households. This adaptation led to significant alterations to the structure, which some might call mutilations. During this period, the Hôtel de la Cloche was occasionally confused with another hotel of a similar name, the Hôtel de la Couronne, which has since been replaced by modern houses.

In the late 19th century, a revival of sorts took place when the building's owner, Mr. Régimont, undertook extensive restorations. He removed the whitewash that had covered the main façade, installed new supports beneath the ground-floor bays, and reinstated the four dormer windows topped with finials on the roof. He also restored the small green-paned windows and the oak shutters adorned with ironwork, returning the building to its former glory and delighting the community of Huy.

Architectural Marvels

The architectural composition of the Hôtel de la Cloche is both intricate and harmonious. The main façade is divided into two distinct sections, separated by a subtle seam running from the ground to the roof. This division suggests that the building may have been constructed in two phases, with the right side predating the left. This is followed by a cornice, another brick register, and a second empty limestone register. The final register is a mix of small windows framed in limestone and brick walls. Above this, a cornice and a slate roof with four dormer windows and finials complete the structure.

The rear façade, marked with the date 1606 in brick, is adorned with three sculpted figures. From left to right, these figures represent a man, a scene that may depict a traveler resting under a leafy tree or a rustic meal, and the bust of a woman. Additionally, five mascarons (decorative faces) embellish the upper register, each with unique characteristics such as a warrior or bourgeois head, a fantastical creature, and two female faces.

The right-side façade mirrors the main façade's design, though all first and second-floor windows are filled in, and a door has been added to the right side of the wall.

Renaissance Mosan Style
