Saint-Étienne

Saint-Étienne Lille

Saint-Étienne

Tucked away in the vibrant heart of Lille, France, stands the majestic Saint-Étienne Church, locally known as église Saint-Étienne de Lille. This architectural gem, with its rich history and stunning baroque style, offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the past. Situated on Rue de l'Hôpital-Militaire, just a stone's throw from the bustling Grand'Place, Saint-Étienne is a must-visit site for anyone exploring the cultural tapestry of Lille.

The Historical Journey of Saint-Étienne

The story of Saint-Étienne is one of resilience and transformation. Originally constructed in 1606 as the chapel for the Jesuit college, the building was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. It wasn't until 1796, after the original parish church was destroyed by fire during the Austrian siege of Lille, that it was designated as a parish church under the patronage of Saint Stephen.

The chapel itself faced its own trials, having been ravaged by fire in 1740. The flames consumed its rich interior, including several paintings by Rubens. Yet, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the church was rebuilt between 1743 and 1748 under the guidance of architect François-Joseph Gombert, following the designs of Dominique Delesalle. It was consecrated anew in 1750, marking the beginning of a new chapter.

Architectural Splendor

The façade of Saint-Étienne is a testament to classical baroque architecture, inspired by the famous Church of the Gesù in Rome. Standing at 29 meters, the stone façade is a striking presence on the narrow street, accentuating its grandeur. The design features two superimposed orders: the lower Ionic and the upper Corinthian, crowned by a semicircular bas-relief inscribed with the date 1747 and the Jesuit monogram, IHS.

Adjacent to the choir, the church boasts a 57-meter high bell tower, topped with a campanile. Inside, the church’s Latin cross layout is both simple and luminous, extending 61 meters in length. The central nave, flanked by lower aisles, is supported by twelve square pillars adorned with Corinthian columns. The nave's barrel-vaulted ceiling, embellished with rococo stucco motifs, adds to the church's elegant charm.

Artistic Treasures Within

Saint-Étienne is home to an array of artistic masterpieces. The pulpit, crafted by renowned sculptor François Rude between 1825 and 1828, is a highlight. Its intricate design features an archangel atop the sounding board and a relief depicting the stoning of Saint Stephen, supported by allegorical figures of Faith and Hope. This piece was designated a historic monument in 1971.

Behind the altar, Victor Mottez’s painting, The Stoning of Saint Stephen (1837), captivates with its dramatic depiction. The church also houses several anonymous 17th-century Flemish paintings and a notable piece by Arnould de Vuez, The Adoration of the Shepherds.

The Grand Organ and Other Marvels

The church’s grand organ, constructed by Daublaine Callinet in 1840 and later modified by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll and Charles Mutin, remains a focal point. With 39 stops across three manuals and pedalboard, it continues to enchant audiences with its rich sound.

In the sacristy, visitors can admire a Flemish chest from the early 17th century, attributed to the Destrée family, alongside Empire-style woodwork.

A Living Heritage

Today, Saint-Étienne remains a vibrant part of Lille's spiritual and cultural life. Since 2017, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest has celebrated Latin Masses here, drawing worshippers and visitors alike. The church also serves as a hub for community outreach, with groups like Saint-Vaast organizing weekly support for the homeless.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, an admirer of art and architecture, or simply seeking a moment of reflection, Saint-Étienne offers a serene escape amidst the lively streets of Lille. Its walls echo with centuries of stories, inviting you to explore and discover the enduring legacy of this remarkable church.
