The Namur Citadel Cable Car, or as the locals call it, the Kabelbaan van de Citadel van Namen, is a modern marvel nestled in the heart of Belgium. This cable car offers a unique and breathtaking journey, whisking visitors from the bustling city center of Namur to the serene heights of the citadel. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or simply in search of stunning views, this attraction promises an unforgettable experience.
The Namur Citadel Cable Car was inaugurated on May 8, 2021, marking a new chapter in the city’s transportation history. The cable car connects Place Maurice Servais with the esplanade of the citadel, offering a scenic ride above the city. The journey takes between six to nine minutes, depending on the number of visitors, allowing ample time to soak in the panoramic views of Namur and its surroundings.
This state-of-the-art cable car system is a pulsed gondola, consisting of four trains with three cabins each. The design was carefully planned to minimize environmental impact, ensuring that as few trees as possible were disturbed and avoiding the underground tunnels of the citadel.
The Namur Citadel Cable Car isn’t the city’s first aerial transport system. Previously, a cable car served the area for nearly 40 years, transporting around five million passengers before its closure in 1997 due to safety concerns. The old system faced its demise after an unfortunate arson attack in 2002, which destroyed the lower station, and the pylons were dismantled in 2005.
In 2013, the city of Namur initiated studies to explore the feasibility of a new cable car, spearheaded by the mayor Maxime Prévot. The current route was chosen for its practicality and minimal environmental disruption, bridging the city center and the historic citadel.

The new cable car system is a testament to modern engineering and design. The architectural firms Pierre Maes & U'MAN architects were responsible for the design, while the construction was entrusted to a consortium of companies including Poma, Franki, and Labellemontagne. This partnership not only constructed the cable car but also manages its operation and maintenance for a 30-year period.
Three of the four pylons were installed with the help of helicopters, an impressive feat that highlighted the meticulous planning and execution involved in the project. Despite delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the cable car opened to much fanfare and is now a year-round attraction.
The Namur Citadel Cable Car operates throughout the year, with weekday hours from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM and weekend hours from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This accessibility makes it a convenient option for both early birds and those who prefer a leisurely afternoon visit.
