The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, locally known as Chiesa di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, is a remarkable architectural and historical gem located at the southernmost tip of a large block at the base of the historic hill of Paternò, Italy. This stunning church stands in close proximity to the Church of Santa Barbara and the former monastery of Santissima Annunziata, enriching the cultural and spiritual landscape of the area.
The current Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria was constructed between 1725 and 1730, replacing an older structure that dated back to the mid-16th century. The original church was severely damaged by the devastating earthquake of 1693. The new church was built thanks to the generous donations of Giacinto Giglio, a priest who served as the temporary governor of the confraternity. The church was consecrated on October 6, 1730, marking a new chapter in its storied history.
In the mid-18th century, the church’s façade and bell tower were completed, adding to its architectural splendor. Between 1774 and 1792, the church saw the addition of exquisite marble altars, and the marble inlaid flooring was installed between 1803 and 1804. Despite suffering significant damage from English bombings in the summer of 1943, the church was repaired in the following years. However, it was once again damaged by the earthquakes of 2002. After extensive restoration work funded by the regional department for civil protection, the church reopened for worship on May 10, 2011.
The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria also houses the veneration of Saints Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino, a tradition that dates back to 1632, further cementing its importance as a center of faith and community.
As you approach the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, you are greeted by a façade that is both imposing and inviting. The church is built on a high basalt base, with four Tuscan pilasters dividing the central section from the lateral ones and supporting a pronounced cornice. The central section features a simple yet elegant entrance portal topped by a window crowned with a triangular pediment. The left section is animated by narrow slits and a circular window that illuminate the bell tower staircase. The bell tower itself is adorned with an open belfry on all four sides, topped by an octagonal cusped dome with a sinuous profile, adding to the church’s distinctive silhouette.
Entering the church, you step into an octagonal hall, with the varying lengths of the sides creating a pronounced longitudinal orientation. The hall is covered by a lunette-vaulted pavilion ceiling, with a pronounced convexity towards the top. The marble inlaid flooring adds a touch of elegance to the interior. The decoration inside the church features Tuscan pilasters that support the entablature on which the drum is set. These pilasters continue into the ribs of the vault, which is divided into eight segments, with a central medallion depicting the Agnus Dei.
On the sides of the octagon perpendicular to the entrance, you will find a side exit and a wooden confessional. The other four sides of the octagon house four altars, with the main altar being significantly larger and made from precious stone materials. This main altar is set on a raised platform, adding to its prominence within the presbytery.
At the center of the vestibule, you will find a double slab that provides access to the crypt, where members of the confraternity were once buried. This feature adds a layer of historical depth to the church, connecting visitors to the past lives and traditions of the local community.
