However, by the early 21st century, the bridge had deteriorated significantly, necessitating weight restrictions and emergency repairs. In 2009, a rehabilitation project was proposed but ultimately shelved due to budget constraints. The bridge's condition continued to worsen, leading to its closure in July 2011 and eventual demolition in early 2012.

The Rise of the New Memorial Bridge

Recognizing the critical need for a replacement, New Hampshire and Maine, with federal support, embarked on constructing a new Memorial Bridge. Designed by Theodore Zoli of HNTB and built by Archer Western Contractors, the new bridge was designed to echo the aesthetic of its predecessor while incorporating modern engineering advancements. The new structure was built atop the original bridge's piers, maintaining a tangible link to its storied past.

The new Memorial Bridge was officially dedicated on August 8, 2013, exactly 90 years after the original bridge's opening. Eileen Foley, who had cut the ribbon as a child, returned to participate in the dedication ceremony, symbolically bridging the past and the present. Initially opened to pedestrians and bicyclists, the bridge soon welcomed vehicular traffic, once again serving as a vital link between Portsmouth and Kittery.

A Modern Marvel

The current Memorial Bridge is a vertical-lift bridge, a design that allows the central span to be raised to accommodate large commercial vessels navigating the Piscataqua River. During the summer months, the lift span remains partially elevated every half-hour between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., facilitating the passage of smaller boats. This feature not only underscores the bridge's engineering prowess but also highlights its role in supporting the region's maritime activities.

One of the standout features of the new Memorial Bridge is its dedication to pedestrian and cyclist access. As the only one of the three bridges spanning the Piscataqua River with provisions for foot and bicycle traffic, it has become an integral part of the proposed East Coast Greenway. Both New Hampshire and Maine have designated the bridge as part of their State Bicycle Routes, encouraging eco-friendly travel and offering stunning views of the river and its surroundings.
