In 2009, Schlosspark underwent a significant renovation, costing around 400,000 euros. This facelift included the installation of granite and basalt paving leading to the castle and the creation of two ponds, designed to mirror their historical counterparts. These enhancements have only added to the park's charm, making it a picturesque destination for visitors.

Exploring Schlosspark

As you enter Schlosspark, you are greeted by the Polenzhaus, a building constructed in 1937 to commemorate the 500th death anniversary of Hans von Polenz. This Renaissance-style structure, complete with a tower and windows reminiscent of the Schloss, now houses a gallery that is part of the local museum. Adjacent to the Polenzhaus, you will find two sculptures: Sitting Woman by Siegfried Krepp and Mother with Child by Ernst Sauer, adding an artistic flair to the park's entrance.

A short stroll from the Polenzhaus brings you to the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn monument, erected in 1911 by the Germania Gymnastics Club. This monument stands as a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage and the spirit of community that has long been a hallmark of Senftenberg.

Another poignant landmark within Schlosspark is the war memorial dedicated to the 528 fallen soldiers of World War I from Senftenberg. Though only remnants of the original sandstone structure remain, it serves as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by the city's inhabitants.

The Senftenberg Zoo

For families and animal lovers, the Senftenberg Zoo within Schlosspark is a delightful attraction. Established in 1931, the zoo initially featured native animals such as deer, swans, and a black fallow deer. Over the years, the zoo's collection has expanded to include a variety of birds, sheep, goats, raccoons, monkeys, and even exotic species like leopards and meerkats.

The zoo underwent significant renovations in 2009, including the construction of a new entrance area and environmental education center, which was inaugurated in 2011. Today, the zoo is managed by the WBS Tierpark-Betriebs GmbH and continues to delight visitors with its diverse animal exhibits and educational programs.
