Steyrer Kripperl

Nestled in the heart of Steyr, Austria, the Steyrer Kripperl is a hidden gem that combines tradition, art, and history in a uniquely enchanting way. This traditional rod puppet theater, located in the historic Innerberger Stadel, offers a glimpse into a bygone era where puppetry was a cherished form of storytelling. Visitors to Steyr will find themselves captivated by the charm and cultural significance of this delightful theater.

The History of Steyrer Kripperl

The origins of the Steyrer Kripperl date back to the mid-19th century, when two traveling nativity plays were popular in the Steyr region. These plays eventually evolved into the Steyrer Kripperl we know today. By 1905, parts of the puppet theater were housed in the Gasthaus zur Sense on Sierningerstraße. In 1914, the theater was transferred to the Verein Heimatschutz, which later became the Verein Heimatpflege. This organization restored and expanded the collection, moving it to various locations before finally settling in the Innerberger Stadel in 1923.

Over the years, the Steyrer Kripperl has become one of the last remaining rod puppet theaters in the German-speaking world. Recognizing its cultural importance, it was inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Austria in 2018. This designation underscores the theater's enduring legacy and its role in preserving the art of puppetry for future generations.

Exploring the Steyrer Kripperl

Visitors stepping into the Steyrer Kripperl are transported into a magical world where puppets come to life on a stage rich with history and craftsmanship. The theater is located on the ground floor of the Innerberger Stadel, a Renaissance building adorned with intricate sgraffito decorations. The venue can accommodate over 110 seated guests, with additional standing room available, ensuring that everyone has a chance to experience the show.

The stage itself is a marvel of design, measuring 5 meters wide, 2 meters high, and approximately 3 meters deep. It is divided into three sections: the under stage, main stage, and backstage. The under stage features a grotto, a well, and a shepherd scene, with the nativity scene of Christ's birth centrally positioned. Flanking the nativity are various mechanical devices and figures representing different crafts, adding a dynamic element to the performance.

The Magic of the Performances

The main stage is where the magic truly happens. Here, rod puppets perform against a backdrop of Steyr's old town houses and a central bridge arch. Behind this arch, a changeable scenic painting, known as the backstage, sets the scene for each performance. The theater boasts a remarkable collection of around 450 original figures, some of which are over 200 years old.

From the beginning of Advent until Epiphany, the Steyrer Kripperl hosts performances every weekend and on holidays, showcasing 23 different Christmas and local historical scenes. The scripts and songs, mostly passed down orally, are performed live by the puppeteers, who skillfully manipulate the figures by hand. This live aspect adds a personal touch to the performances, making each show a unique experience.

A Tradition Carried Forward

For many years, the Steyrer Kripperl was led by Gerhard Nezbeda, who served as the director until 2020. Following a modernization and renovation in conjunction with the Upper Austrian State Exhibition in 2021, a small group of dedicated players now oversees the theater's operations. In addition to regular performances, special shows are organized around Christmas for larger groups and school classes, ensuring that the tradition continues to inspire new audiences.

Visiting the Innerberger Stadel

The Innerberger Stadel itself is a historical masterpiece. Built around 1612/13, this Renaissance structure features a distinctive gabled roof and is adorned with sgraffito artwork. Originally serving as a granary, it later became a museum, housing both the Steyrer Kripperl and the City Museum of Steyr. The building's rich history and architectural beauty provide a fitting backdrop for the puppet theater, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.

In conclusion, a visit to the Steyrer Kripperl is more than just a trip to a puppet theater; it's an immersion into the cultural and historical tapestry of Steyr. The theater's dedication to preserving the art of puppetry, coupled with its enchanting performances, makes it a must-visit destination for those exploring this picturesque Austrian town. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a lover of the arts, or simply seeking a unique experience, the Steyrer Kripperl promises to delight and inspire.
