In 1399, the patronage rights were transferred to the chapter of Eindhoven, marking a significant shift in its ecclesiastical history.

The church became a focal point for the veneration of St. Machutus in the early 15th century. A hermitage near the church served as a pilgrimage site for those seeking the saint's intervention against ailments like rickets, known locally as the gebreck van S. Machuijt. Despite the tumult of the Reformation and subsequent religious transformations, the devotion lingered until the interwar period, highlighting the enduring spiritual significance of the site.

The Straw Church and Its Evolution

Following the fall of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1629, the Sint-Petruskerk was repurposed, stripped of its role in Catholic worship. It found new life as a straw church, serving as a tithe barn and even a refuge for livestock during floods. This unusual chapter in its history was immortalized in a drawing by Hendrik Verhees in 1787.

The Catholic community, relegated to worship in a barn church at Heikant, fought for the return of their church. A New Beginning in Neo-Romanesque Style

In 1884, the church was reborn in a striking neo-Romanesque style, designed by the renowned architect Carl Weber. The new structure, located at De Heuvel, replaced the former rectory and became a beacon of architectural beauty. Despite initial setbacks, including the collapse of the north transept in 1882, the church rose to prominence with a simpler yet elegant design.

Over the years, as Vught expanded, new parishes branched off from Sint-Petrus, each carrying a piece of its legacy. The church's relics, including an 18th-century silver reliquary housing the remains of St. Machutus and St. Bernoldus, along with a 15th-century oak statue believed to represent Machutus, are cherished artifacts of its storied past.

Modern Transformation and Cultural Hub

In 2003, the parishes of Vught were consolidated into the Edith Stein Parish, and by 2005, the Sint-Petruskerk was deconsecrated. Yet, its story did not end there. A dedicated foundation took on the mission to preserve this historic structure, repurposing it as a vibrant cultural center known as DePetrus.

Today, the church is a bustling hub of community life, housing the Vught Library, the Vught Museum, and various cultural organizations. Its transformation into a meeting place and cultural venue exemplifies the adaptability and enduring relevance of historical sites in contemporary society.
