Wellington Museum Wellington

Wellington Museum

Wellington Museum, nestled on the vibrant Queens Wharf, is a captivating destination that offers an immersive journey through the history of New Zealand’s capital city. Housed in the historic 1892 Bond Store, this museum has been recognized as one of the world's top 50 museums by The Times, and it's easy to see why. With its engaging exhibits and unique storytelling, the museum celebrates Wellington's rich maritime heritage, early Māori and European settlement, and the city's evolution over 150 years as New Zealand’s capital.

The History of Wellington Museum

The Wellington Museum began its life in 1972 as the Wellington Maritime Museum, under the auspices of the Wellington Harbour Board. In 1989, it transitioned to the Wellington City Council, expanding its scope to include the broader social history of the region. The transformation into the Museum of Wellington City & Sea was completed in 1999, and in July 2015, it was rebranded as the Wellington Museum. This evolution reflects the museum's commitment to telling the diverse stories of Wellington and its people.

Exploring the Museum

Visitors to the Wellington Museum can explore four floors of exhibits that bring the city’s history to life. Each floor offers a unique perspective on Wellington’s past, from its maritime roots to its development as a vibrant urban center. One of the highlights is the giant cinema screen that spans three floors, showcasing films about Wellington’s history and culture.

The museum’s interactive displays and storytelling techniques make it a hit with visitors of all ages. Whether you're a history buff or a curious traveler, the museum offers a wealth of information and entertainment.

The Bond Store and Telling Tales

The museum’s building, the Bond Store, is an exhibit in itself. This late Victorian warehouse once held bonded cargo and now stands as a testament to Wellington's maritime heritage. The Bond Store exhibit allows visitors to step back in time and experience the building as it was in its heyday.

The Telling Tales exhibit, now evolved into Te Whanganui-a-Tara, explores the history of Wellington throughout the 20th century. Using a collection of artifacts, it marks significant events that have shaped the city.

Maritime Gallery and Wahine Theatre

The Maritime Gallery is a must-see for anyone interested in Wellington’s nautical history. It includes a full-scale captain's cabin and a display dedicated to Paddy the Wanderer, a well-loved canine character in the city’s history. The Wahine Theatre provides a poignant memorial to the TEV Wahine disaster, featuring items salvaged from the wreck and a short film by filmmaker Gaylene Preston.

The Von Kohorn Room

Named after Baron Ralph Steven von Kohorn, a key figure in the museum’s history, the Von Kohorn Room was once the boardroom of the Wellington Harbour Board. This room is a tribute to von Kohorn’s significant contributions to the museum and the city, and it reflects the elegance and authority of Wellington’s maritime past.

The Attic

The Attic, a recent addition to the museum, opened in late 2015 after extensive refurbishment. This new exhibition space offers a fresh look at Wellington’s history, with interactive displays and innovative storytelling techniques that engage and inspire visitors.

Visiting Wellington Museum

Located on Wellington’s picturesque waterfront, the museum is easily accessible and offers a delightful experience for locals and tourists alike. Admission is free, making it an ideal destination for families and individuals looking to explore the city’s rich cultural heritage without breaking the bank.

Wellington Museum isn’t just a place to learn about the past; it’s a vibrant space that celebrates the spirit and stories of Wellington. From its maritime roots to its status as a modern capital, the museum captures the essence of the city in a way that is both educational and entertaining.
