The History of Noorderkerk

The origins of the Noorderkerk are deeply intertwined with the religious and social movements of the late 19th century. In 1887, a faction of churchgoers in Ede broke away from the Dutch Reformed Church during the Doleantie, a significant schism in Dutch Protestantism. Initially, this new congregation found refuge in the coach house of G.J.C. Cavaljé, a prominent businessman from Amsterdam who had joined the secession.

Despite Cavaljé’s initial intentions to build a church on a plot he purchased at the corner of Telefoonweg and Veenderweg, circumstances led to the establishment of a school instead. Eventually, a suitable location was found on Amsterdamseweg, near the railway crossing of the Nijkerk - Ede-Wageningen line, where the Gereformeerde Kerk was inaugurated on December 17, 1903.

The name Noorderkerk came into use later, in 1940, when a second Reformed Church was built in the Beatrixpark on Maanderzand, named Zuiderkerk. The original church in the center was then called Noorderkerk. Over the years, the building underwent several restorations and renovations, adapting to the changing needs of its congregation and the community.

The Architecture of Noorderkerk

The Noorderkerk stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of Albert Kool, a local architect from Ede. The building is an eclectic masterpiece, constructed from red and yellow bricks, showcasing elements of neo-Renaissance and rationalist styles. One of the most striking features is the large stained-glass window facing the street, which adds a touch of grandeur to the structure.

The church also boasts a distinctive clock tower, although it originally lacked a clock. It wasn't until 1939 that a fundraising campaign enabled the installation of a clock, which was first rung a decade later. The Organ

A highlight of the Noorderkerk is its magnificent organ, installed in 1918 and originating from the Corneliuskerk in Limmen. This organ, built in 1882 by the renowned firm L. Ypma & Co. from Alkmaar, has been a central feature of the church’s musical heritage. The organ underwent restoration in 1979, ensuring its continued use in both religious services and concerts.

Restoration and Transformation

Throughout its history, the Noorderkerk has seen numerous restorations and transformations. Significant renovations took place in 1942, 1953, and 1977, during which the entire interior was revamped and an annex was added. By 2010, declining membership led the church’s administration to sell the building to a developer. As a municipal monument, the Noorderkerk could not be demolished, paving the way for its conversion into a concert hall and office space.

The final church service was held on January 9, 2011. The building was then renovated and restored during the winter of 2012/2013, opening its doors as the Edesche Concertzaal, a premier venue for chamber music. The concert hall features a Bösendorfer grand piano and the historic organ, both of which are regularly used in performances.

The Edesche Concertzaal

Today, the Edesche Concertzaal is a cultural beacon, hosting a wide array of musical events with a particular focus on chamber music. The concert hall has become a hub for music enthusiasts, offering an intimate setting with exceptional acoustics. In 2018, it hosted the International Chamber Music Festival Ede, organized in collaboration with artistic director Anna Fedorova.

The concert hall also features an artist-in-residence program, attracting renowned musicians from around the world. Past artists-in-residence include Marlene Hemmer, Anna Fedorova, Hannes Minnaar, Nino Gvetadze, Maria Milstein, Severin von Eckardstein, Anastasia Kobekina, and Elisabeth Brauß, each contributing to the rich musical tapestry of the venue.
