Parc de Can Boixeras

Parc de Can Boixeras Esplugues de Llobregat

Parc de Can Boixeras

Parc de Can Boixeras, also known locally as Can Buxeres, is a verdant oasis nestled in the heart of Esplugues de Llobregat, Spain. This enchanting park, with its rich history and stunning landscapes, offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply in search of a peaceful retreat, Parc de Can Boixeras has something to captivate and delight every visitor.

A Journey Through History

The history of Parc de Can Boixeras is as intriguing as the park itself. Originally known as Ca n'Alemany, the estate was first documented in 1770 by the Baron of Maldà. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous transformations. In the early 19th century, it was inherited by Antoni d’Alemany i de Pallejà and later by his descendants. By the mid-19th century, the estate became known as Casa Alta. The most significant change came in 1875 when Joaquima Casanovas acquired the property and added a neo-Mudejar tower, which served as a water mill.

The estate's transformation into a summer residence began in 1901 under the ownership of Lluís Buxeres i Abat. The renowned architect Antoni Serrallach was commissioned to remodel the old farmhouse, integrating new galleries and designing the masoveria (caretaker's house). The park's current layout, with its beautifully landscaped gardens, was largely the work of architect Manuel Joaquim Raspall i Mayol, who added ornamental fountains, mosaic-decorated planters, and the iconic wall and gate.

Following the death of Lluís Buxeres in 1909, the property passed through several hands within the Buxeres family. During the Spanish Civil War, the estate was collectivized by the anarcho-syndicalists of the CNT. However, it was returned to the Buxeres family after the war. In 1968, the estate was purchased by the City Council of L’Hospitalet and was officially declared a municipal park in 1972.

Architectural Marvels

As you stroll through Parc de Can Boixeras, you will encounter a delightful blend of architectural styles and historic structures. The entrance gate, with its classical stone and iron design, dates back to 1911 and features Corinthian pilasters and a grand archway. This gateway sets the tone for the elegance that awaits within.

One of the park's standout features is the modernist temple, a circular structure adorned with a dome supported by six columns. The temple's intricate mosaic decoration, crafted by master builder Gonçal Batlle i Monrós, showcases the artistry and attention to detail that went into its creation. The columns, made of concrete, are embellished with white and dark mosaics, adding a touch of whimsy to the structure.

The masoveria, designed by Antoni Serrallach, is another architectural gem within the park. This charming building features a ground floor, an upper floor, and an attic, all topped with a double-pitched roof. The elliptical arched entrance and rectangular windows with rounded lintels give the masoveria a distinctive character. The facade's undulating finish cleverly conceals the roof, creating a seamless and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Art and Nature in Harmony

Parc de Can Boixeras is not just a feast for the eyes but also a sanctuary for the soul. The park is home to a diverse array of sculptures, fountains, and lush greenery. Among the notable sculptures are La Familia by Hector Cesena and La Noia del Colom by Rafael Solanic. La Familia is a realistic yet stylized marble sculpture depicting a man, a woman, and a child, symbolizing unity and love. La Noia del Colom is a graceful marble statue of a nude girl holding a dove, reflecting the influence of Aristide Maillol and Esteve Monegal on Solanic's work.

The park's gardens are meticulously maintained, offering a tranquil setting for visitors to relax and unwind. The combination of mature trees, vibrant flower beds, and well-placed sculptures creates a harmonious blend of art and nature. The ornamental fountains and mosaic-decorated planters add to the park's charm, making it a delightful place to explore and enjoy.

A Modern-Day Haven

Today, Parc de Can Boixeras serves as a beloved public space for residents and visitors alike. The park's serene pathways, shaded by ancient trees, provide a perfect setting for leisurely walks, picnics, or simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings.
