The origins of Santa Magdalena d'Esplugues can be traced back to an ancient chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of Esplugues. Initially, this chapel was under the care of the Monastery of Sant Pere de les Puelles in Barcelona. In 1103, it was elevated to the status of a parish church by the Bishop of Barcelona, Berenguer Bernat.

In 1503, a Gothic-style church was erected, replacing the earlier Romanesque chapel. This structure served the community until 1864, when it was replaced by the current church, designed by the architect Josep Simó Fontcuberta. The new church embraced an eclectic style, harmoniously blending various architectural influences.

Architectural Highlights

Santa Magdalena d'Esplugues is a single-nave church with a rectangular plan, featuring a transept and four side chapels nestled between robust buttresses. The church’s design incorporates a barrel-vaulted ceiling with transverse arches, creating a sense of grandeur and openness.

The church's façade, enhanced in 2003 to commemorate its 900th anniversary, boasts a striking portico with three semi-circular arches, the central one towering above its companions. A triangular pediment crowns the entrance, complemented by a slightly off-centered rose window that adds a touch of whimsy to the symmetrical design.

Standing proudly to the right of the façade is the 45-meter-high bell tower. This Renaissance-inspired structure features a square base, adorned with four arched windows and a clock, beneath which the bells are housed.

In the semi-circular tympanum, a Byzantine-inspired composition portrays Christ Pantocrator, surrounded by the four evangelists. The ceiling is graced with an image of God the Father, blessing the congregation, encircled by angels.

The side chapels of Santa Magdalena d'Esplugues house a variety of artworks and religious icons. The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception features a ceramic relief panel of the Virgin Mary, crowned by angels. The Chapel of the Holy Christ showcases a polychromed carving of the crucified Christ, set against a ceramic backdrop depicting the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and the Holy Spirit, crafted by Angelina Alós.
